WMU's McGinnis Reading Center & Clinic will begin after-school literacy tutoring January 29, 2013 for K - 8 students. This program will extend students' knowledge and expertise in reading, writing, and critical literacy skills with various kinds of texts. 
Each student will receive individualized assessments and instruction from experienced teachers working toward their graduate and undergraduate degrees. Students will engage with strategy instruction and project-based learning in order to develop new skills, confidence, and an appreciation for life long learning. Dependents of WMU students, faculty, and staff receive a 10% discount and a limited amount of financial assistance is available upon approval.

A young child struggles to read a book. Insufficient reading skills hamper a college student's studies. Many examples of the need for trained literacy specialists fill our world. The Reading Tutoring Program (RTP) under the Department of Special Education and Literacy Studies is actively addressing this need.
The Dorothy J. McGinnis Reading Center and Clinic serves as an intern facility for undergraduate and graduate students to gain valuable hands-on experience under the professional guidance of the Literacy Studies Faculty. The Clinic provides literacy assessment and tutoring services to students from the surrounding community and school districts.
The Reading Center and Clinic Library is available for Literacy Studies graduate students and clinic tutors. The library offers a variety of fiction and non-fiction books on diverse topics and houses professional materials for literacy teachers and tutors in the university and community.

At the Dorothy J. McGinnis Reading Center and Clinic, students are tutored throughout the year. The sessions contain fun activities alongside learning experiences. Students share in many experiences to help them read and write. The clinic proudly displays their work in the lobby and creates a portfolio each semester containing highlights of each student's work.
