Reading Activities & Tips

Computer The Internet can aid in your work with a child or youth in reading. The following sites were chosen according to their compatibility with tutoring techniques used in the Dorothy J. McGinnis Reading Center and Clinic.

Primary Games - Created by a teacher, online games and activities review ABC's, reading, writing and alphabetical order.
Word Central - Merriam-Webster's Word Central offers kids a student dictionary, Daily Buzzword and interactive word games.
Fun Brain - All sorts of online language games help kids master everything from spelling to grammar and have fun in the process.
Write On Reader- Fifth graders created this platinum-award winning site about reading and writing for Thinkquest Jr. 2000. It includes information on making books and tips about writing from well-known authors.
Children's Literature Web Guide -- An index of Internet resources related to books for children and young adults. This is an index you can use to find on-line resources for your tutoring or allow your child to surf for areas of interest in reading.
Yahooligans -- An index for finding sites for kids and youth on the Internet. This website helps you find sites on the Web related to your interests. Again, you or your child can surf the Web with this site.
Build-A-Card -- This site allows your child to create a card on the Internet. The card becomes its own Web page and is on the Web for about 2 weeks. The site can move slowly. Also, only 20 people are allowed on the page at a time so you may not be able to connect. Finally, you have 5 minutes for each decision or you may lose the connection. The final card can be printed. It could also be accessed by a friend or parent later as an on-line Web card.
Reader's Theater Editions -- This page offers a collection of Reader's Theater scripts.
Disney -- Disney has this fun page including the site Disney Story Book where you can read stories on the Web. This site also has pictures to view, sounds to hear and other options as well. The page has a lot of graphics so access can be slow.
Madlib! -- Fill in the blanks with nouns, verbs and adjectives and create a funny story on the Web.
World of Escher -- This site has a Reading Room and an Art Museum containing stories about and the art of M.C. Escher.
