Within the curriculum of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Spanish offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts major and minor in Spanish. Similarly, a Spanish major and minor are available in an Education curriculum. Requirements vary somewhat from one WMU Undergraduate Catalog to the next.
Before enrolling in the first Spanish class students must take the online placement exam to determine the WMU class appropriate for their level of preparedness. The online exam is found on the WMU homepage within the GoWMU portal. To enter the portal students need a BroncoID and password. To take the online exam a WIN (Western Identification Number) is necessary. Students may choose to take the monitored test-out exam also. Both the online and the monitored test (if taken) must be completed before enrolling in the first Spanish class at WMU.
In addition to the major and minor requirements listed below, students who have chosen to major in Spanish must also satisfy WMU's Baccalaureate Writing requirement by successfully completing LANG 3750, Foreign Literature in English Translation, which does not apply toward the hours required for a major or minor. Students who have more than one major may fulfill this requirement in another major.
Residency requirement: Although students may be able to fulfill some hours toward a Spanish Major or Minor with transfer credits from another university or from study abroad, a minimum number of credits must be taken on campus at WMU.
Majors in catalog years prior to Fall 2005 must take at least four Spanish courses of the total required for the major on campus. One of these must be a 5000-level literature class. Minors in Spanish must take at least three courses of the total required for the minor at the 2000-level or above on campus at WMU.
Beginning Fall 2005, Majors in Spanish must take at least five courses of the total required for the major on campus at WMU. These five courses must be at the 2000-level or above. At least two of the five must be 4000- or 5000-level classes.
Beginning Fall 2005, Minors in Spanish must take at least four courses of the total required for the minor on campus. These four courses must be at the 2000-level or above. At least one of the four must be above SPAN 3170.
Only courses in which a grade of "C" or better is obtained will be counted toward a Spanish major or minor.
Please note that no student may graduate under a catalog which is more than ten years old.
