Spanish Graduate Study in México at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro

Western Michigan University Spanish Graduate Study in Querétaro 2009 (June 29-July 23)

Perfect your Spanish skills, discover the cultural, historical and architectural treasures of the central part of Mexico AND . . . earn 3 or 6 hours of WMU Spanish graduate credit.

Photo: Queretaro. The WMU study abroad program at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro (UAQ) offers WMU graduate students and other qualified applicants an opportunity to improve their fluency and knowledge of the Spanish language, as well as to deepen their understanding of Hispanic culture.  This program should be of particular interest to secondary Spanish teachers who are working toward a graduate degree or who need to satisfy certification requirements.  During the four-week program, students can take either one or two intensive graduate courses, one taught by faculty from the UAQ and the other by faculty from the Department of Spanish of WMU.  Students will earn 3 or 6 hours of graduate credit at WMU (Summer II).  They will have the option to live with local families, one student per family.

Eligibility

  • Students who have been admitted to the Spanish M.A. or Ph.D. program at WMU.
  • Students not enrolled in a WMU Spanish graduate program who have completed an undergraduate major in Spanish at an accredited university, with a 3.0 grade point average in Spanish classes.  Please consult Western’s web site for details on admission with PTG status (Permission to Take Graduate Classes) or as a regular graduate student.

Cost

$2,495.00 (approximate). This price includes tuition, insurance and administrative fees.  The cost does not include housing, round trip transportation (estimated $600-900), books or personal expenses. Students who live with a Mexican family will pay an additional $494.00 ($19 per day for 26 days).  This housing cost includes two meals per day, a private room and laundry facilities.

Activities

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the abundant historical and architectural treasures located in Querétaro and neighboring cities and states.  Querétaro itself offers many cultural and social activities including theater, concerts and festivals.

Financial Aid

WMU students who already receive summer financial aid (university, state, federal) probably will be able to use it for study in Querétaro. Questions about this matter should be directed to the Office of Study Abroad, B-200 Ellsworth Hall.
