Sue C. Mardis Award in Spanish
This scholarship honors
the memory of Sue C. Mardis, a graduate of Western Michigan
University and former
high school teacher of languages. Ms. Mardis was an enthusiastic
advocate of the study abroad experience.
Description
- One award of $2500 (or two of $1250) for
study in a Spanish-speaking country.
- The award is to be used for a program of study
approved by the Spanish faculty advisor for study
abroad. Study needs to begin within one year of award
and must be for at least one full semester.
- Preference will be given to those who enroll in
WMU-sponsored programs.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be women students currently enrolled
full-time at WMU. Minority candidates are encouraged
to apply.
- Spanish students must have a declared Spanish major
or be a graduate student in Spanish.
- Students must have completed at least one 3000-level
course in Spanish at WMU prior to the semester of
application. In addition, they must complete at least
one more 3000-level course in Spanish by the end of
the semester of application.
- An overall 3.0 GPA or better at the time of
application.
- Study in a program abroad that has been approved by
the Spanish study abroad advisor.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated academic achievement in Spanish study.
- Demonstrated overall academic achievement.
- Typed essay of at least 300 words detailing the
applicants interests and goals as they relate
to study in a Spanish-speaking country.
- Interview with Spanish faculty. Interviews will be
limited to finalists only.
Application Process
- Application forms will be available in the Department of Spanish, 410 Sprau
Tower, telephone 269 387-3001; fax 269 387-3103.
- A complete application, a copy of the Spanish major
slip (not necessary for Spanish graduate students),
and an unofficial WMU transcript are submitted to the
department office, 410 Sprau Tower.
- Scholarship winners will be announced by the end of
the Fall Semester.
