Alba Fernández Fernández is a teaching assistant in the Department of Spanish at Western Michigan University.
Originally from Burgos, in northern Spain, she earned her B.A. in History and Artistic Heritage at the University of Burgos in 2014, the same year she came to the U.S. At WMU she completed her M.A. in Spanish and is currently pursuing her PhD. In 2016, she received the Graduate Research and Creative Scholar Award.
Her research interests focus on 20th-21st century Spanish history and narrative. Specifically, how the experiences of the Spanish civil war and the Franco regime reflect the mentality of the Spanish people through the historic novel in a modern context.
She describes her venture into teaching Spanish to be rewarding and fulfilling. Known for creating an enriching environment in her classes, her students develop a love and appreciation for Hispanic language in a positive exchange of cultures that allows them to embrace new customs as well as better understand their own. She also enjoys the aroma of freshly brewed coffee while grading on a Saturday morning.
