WMU-Southwest Facility & Virtual Tour

As far back as 1905, Western Michigan University has offered extension courses in southwest Michigan, and WMU-Southwest continues that tradition today. WMU’s Southwest site, located at the entrance of Lake Michigan College's Napier Avenue campus in Benton Harbor, marks the first time a Michigan university has chosen to build a facility on a community college campus. This facility houses:

  • 45,000 square-feet
  • 12 classrooms
  • Computer lab
  • 2 Science labs
  • 2 Conference rooms
  • Study areas
  • Student commons
  • Reading clinic
  • Faculty, advising and administrative offices

Western Michigan University and Lake Michigan College (LMC) formed a partnership in 2000 allowing LMC’s students to make a seamless transition into junior and senior level courses at WMU’s Southwest site. Students have the unique flexibility of obtaining an associates degrees by attending LMC for two years, and then completing their bachelor's degrees at WMU. Students can then move on to enroll and complete graduate programs at the WMU-Southwest site.

Being in close proximity to LMC gives our students the opportunity to use the LMC library and other key resources. Students can also participate in the child care services offered at Lake Michigan College on a fee-for-services basis. Arrangements are made to give WMU-Southwest students higher priority than that of the general public.

The Mendel Center for Arts and Technology at LMC offers a complete catering service so groups meeting at Southwest can order anything from snacks and meals to specially designed menus.

The promise of the WMU Southwest site is to provide the benefits of Western Michigan University’s main campus in Southwest Michigan, in conjunction with our valued partnership with Lake Michigan College.
