PAULA BRUSH
My areas of specialization include classical and contemporary social theory, feminist theory, race relations, and social movements. I'm also quite interested in the sociology of literature, particularly autobiography and the popular press. My research focuses on understanding the experiences of women and men involved in social movement activity. I've published work that uses autobiography to examine how African-American women draw on the discourses of the Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s movement to identify and interpret their experiences of racism and sexism. In a second area of research, I 'm interested in how minority social movement organizations serve as a resource base for mobilizing new movement organizations. In particular, I'm focused on how members of the National Organization for Women founded feminist senior organizations like the Older Women's League and the Gray Panthers. Finally, my work is increasingly focused on multiculturalism in higher education
I teach several graduate courses in Sociology including Contemporary Social Theory: Agency, Interaction and Structure; Social Movements; Feminist Social Theory; and American Indian Women. At the undergraduate level I teach Social Theory.
