Dr. Charles Crawford
Dr.
Crawford is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Western
Michigan University. He has a BA in criminal justice from
the University of Florida and a M.S. and Ph.D. in
criminology from Florida State University. He has recently
published in the areas measuring and assessing police use of
force, policing and excessive force, school shootings, and
car stereo culture. His current research involves the study
of situational factors in police use of force, and race and
pretextual stops.
The theme that runs through my research is analyzing
decision making points within the criminal justice system
and placing these actions within their structural and
situational context.
This approach is best exemplified in my co-authored textbook
from Prentice Hall entitled: Police -Citizen Violence,
Officers, Suspects, and Places.
Currently I teach or have taught: Introduction to Criminal
Justice, Sociology of Law Enforcement, Correctional Process
at the undergraduate level, and The Context of Crime and
Punishment, and Guns, Violence and American Society at the
graduate level.
