New domestic student enrollees: Enrollment will be accepted for the Fall 2008 semester WMU student health insurance program between August 1 st and Sept 12th. To purchase the policy, please go to www.aetnastudenthealth.com (formerly known as Chickering), click on “students”, then “find your school”. Complete policy information can be found under “benefit details”. Online enrollment is available by selecting “enroll”. Coverage begins on August 20th. Students must have at least one Fall credit hour at WMU to qualify to purchase.

*If you lose health insurance from a different source in the middle of a semester, contact the Sindecuse Health Center Student Insurance Office to see if you qualify for a mid-semester enrollment in the WMU program.

Note: There are 2 policies to choose from – Basic and Comprehensive – Please choose carefully.

Graduate Assistants– Enrollment using your GA benefit subsidy is only done at the beginning of the fall and/or spring semesters. Do not enroll on the Aetna website. Go to www.wmich.edu/grad for info and to enroll in the insurance program.

International students–Health insurance is mandatory while studying in the US, and is automatically purchased for you and charged to your university account. Your Fall tuition bill will show the Fall insurance fee. Your Spring tuition bill will show the Spring/Summer insurance fee. To waive, please provide proof of private insurance coverage in the Sindecuse Health Center Student Insurance Office before September 12th. The requirements for a private insurance are:

  • Medical Benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
  • A deductible not to exceed $500
  • Repatriation of Remains in the amount of $7,500 (transportation expenses for returning body home in case of a death)
  • Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange
  • visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000 (transportation when no death occurs)
  • Must cover through the Summer 09 session
  • Medicare/Medicaid are not acceptable as alternative policies

Enrolling dependents – All dependent enrollment is done online at the Aetna Student Health website. Domestic students will include dependents when they enroll themselves. International students and Graduate Assistants will use the appropriate form specific for your status.

Sindecuse Health Center claims will be submitted directly to our student insurance company. Our policy is a member of the Aetna PPO network. If you need to see a specialist (with a referral from Sindecuse), or if you are further than 25 miles from campus, you can access the DocFind section on the Aetna Student Health website to locate a participating provider. Insurance payments for Preferred Providers vs. Out-of-Network Providers are explained in the student insurance policy brochure found online.

Financial Aid students: The insurance premium may be able to be paid out of your financial aid account if you contact the Student Insurance Office prior to the Financial Aid Office's money disbursement date. The disbursement date for the Fall 08 semester is August 22nd. If you miss that date, simply use the appropriate amount from your financial aid disbursement check to enroll yourself on the Aetna Student Health website, and you will have accomplished the same goal with the same money.
