H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

I Have Been Diagnosed

Should I be working or attending class and/or other campus events if I have influenza symptoms?

No. Individuals who have been diagnosed with an influenza virus should not be near others who are well to decrease spread of infection to others. Individuals should remain separated from others until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without using fever reducing medicine (Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen).

How will I know if my illness illness is worsening and need to see a clinician?

Individuals who experience the following symptoms should seek medical care: increasing fever, shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, rapid breathing, worsening dehydration despite intake of liquids, worsening vomiting and diarrhea, severe dizziness, confusion, and worsening cough. If you are uncertain as to whether you should seek medical care, please call 269-387-3287 to discuss your illness with a Sindecuse health professional.

What should I do if my symptoms worsen and Sindecuse Health Center is not open?

Please seek medical care at a local urgent care center or emergency room.

If I am Diagnosed with Swine Flu, how can I prevent spread of infection to others?

Return home when possible. If you are unable to return home, isolate yourself in an area where only caretakers will have contact with you until you no longer have fever for 24 hours without using fever reducing medicine such as Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

Will students be required to have a note from a healthcare professional to return to class or work when they have an influenza-like illness?

The CDC does not recommend that doctor's notes be required. If you must miss class, contact your instructors immediately by phone or e-mail to let them know your status. Faculty members have been asked to exercise flexibility and to assist students in making up work they may miss. A doctor's note will not be required for an absence due to flu-like illness.
