HIV Counseling, Education and Testing

Completely Anonymous and FREE for WMU Students
($5 for all others)

HIV antibody testing is encouraged for anyone who has had sexual intercourse without barrier protection, or has been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection.

Counseling and testing can help you evaluate previous risk behaviors and gain skills and confidence for risk reduction. Testing that occurs early in the infection process also offers you the greatest opportunity for maintaining the quality of your life. The counseling and testing process includes an intitial 30-minute appointment and a 15-minute follow-up appointment one week later to get your results.

Anonymous testing ensures that test results are not associated with your identity.

OraSure

What is Orasure? It's a painless, non-invasive alternative to traditional blood testing.
  • OraSure provides a safe, effective and highly accurate means for HIV antibody testing (99.7%) without the need for blood or needles.
  • It does not test saliva, but rather a sample of oral mucosal transudate (OMT) from the gum.
  • Collecting the specimen is painless and easy. A specially treated pad attached to a small handle is placed between the lower cheek and gum for two minutes.
  • The pad draws the transudate through the gum to the pad.
  • The pad is then placed in a vial with a preservative and is sent to a laboratory for testing.
