The Health Center has a dedicated staff of physicians and physician assistants who have chosen college health because they want to work with students. Our physicians come from a wide variety of backgrounds. All of our physicians are Board Certified in their specialty. Board certification requires varying years of postgraduate training and successful completion of a certification examination measuring clinical knowledge and competence.
Our physician assistants (P.A.s) are health professionals who have completed a two-year medical program after undergraduate education and have prior experience as a paramedic, nurse or health care technician. Education as a physician assistant emphasizes the diagnosis and treatment of common and urgent medical problems. Physician assistants are qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and provide medical care for a wide variety of medical problems. They are also licensed to perform diagnostic procedures and minor surgeries, and to prescribe medications and treatments. All of our physician assistants are certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and function under the guidelines of the Michigan Medical Practice Acts.
Our physicians and physician assistants coordinate your care, provide you with primary medical services and facilitate referrals for specialty care for you within the Health Center or the Kalamazoo area.
Sindecuse Nursing and Certified Medical Assistant staff serve the student/faculty/staff of Western Michigan University in diverse ways. Many of our registered nurse staff are certified in college health. Nursing services include international travel consultation, immunizations, allergy injections, pregnancy testing, triage services, tobacco cessation, EKGs, drug screening, TB screening, lice checks, suture removal, ear lavage, blood pressure checks and outreach immunization clinics.
