The Mallinson Institute for Science Education is a research-oriented unit devoted to science education and to the study and improvement of how people teach and learn science. Ranked as one of America’s best graduate education and research programs in science education, the Institute offers two graduate degree programs: the Master’s in Science Education (also offered online) and Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education. The graduate programs are science content focused with attention to effective pedagogy.
The MA in Science Education is designed for anyone interested in the teaching of science at the k-12 level. The program helps students improve their knowledge of science and expertise as teachers of science. The MA program also prepares students for entrance to the PhD program in science education. The program requires 30 credit hours and is offered in two formats.
The PhD in Science Education is for those with a science or science education background who wish to pursue careers as college or university science teachers, science education researchers, science teacher educators, curriculum specialists, high school science department chairs or professionals in government agencies or school districts.
All students are required to conduct original research. Faculty expertise includes the following:
• The effective teaching and learning of science
• The nature of science and scientific inquiry in science education
• Assessment and evaluation in science education
• Philosophical, historical and cultural issues in science education
• Science teacher education and curriculum issues
• Reform policy in science education
• Cognition in science education
• Quantitative and qualitative research methods in science education.

Who may apply?
To apply, a student must have a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, general science, the earth sciences, physics, or teacher education.
Evidence of Financial Support
Students must show evidence of financial support either in the form of scholarships or personal finances.
