| Dr. Oppliger has been chair of the Department of Science Studies, a member of the physics department, teaching physics and astronomy, and has been associated with the environmental studies program. He is interested in and concerned about physics and science education. Dr. Oppliger retired the summer of 2001 after 38 years of exemplary service to the University.

Dr. Poel held a joint appointment in the Physics Department and the Mallinson Institute for Science Education. He also directed the The Center for Science Education activities, providing professional development programs, workshops, and courses for K-12 area teachers. The Center also develops curriculum for course materials and overall school science curriculum. Dr. Poel's research interests are centered in physics, studying conceptual understanding, conceptual change, and conceptual development.

| Dr. Sharma's research interest focused on the participation of women in the sciences in developing and developed countries. She has worked to train prospective science teachers such that they encourage the participation of women and minority students in the sciences. She always worked to better serve international students.
