LTC DONALD V. PHILLIPS

PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

Lieutenant Colonel Donald V. Phillips, a Distinguished Military Graduate of Duke University Army ROTC, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Armor in May, 1987.

He has served as a Tank Platoon and Support Platoon Leader in the 8th Infantry Division, Federal Republic of Germany, on Battalion Staff and as a Tank Company and Headquarters Company Commander in the 24th and 3rd Infantry Divisions and as an instructor at the United States Army Infantry Advanced Course. As a field grade officer, LTC Phillips served as 2nd Squadron Executive Officer and Regimental Operations Officer of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Irwin, California and as a Current Operations Officer, Combined Forces Land Component Command, Camp Doha, Kuwait. Prior to arriving at Western Michigan University, he served as the Australian Exercises Coordinator, US Pacific Command at Camp Smith, Hawaii. Operational experience includes OPERATIONS DESERT SHIELD/STORM, SOUTHERN WATCH, VIGILANT WARRIOR and ENDURING FREEDOM.

Academic and leadership credentials include a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in History from Duke University and a Masters of Military History awarded by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course, Airborne School, the Joint Firepower Controllers Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School and the Command and General Staff College. He has received the Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award and Draper Award for Excellence in Armor and Cavalry.

Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service and Army Commendation Medals, Joint Service and Army Achievement Medals, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, and the Southwest Asia Service Medal with three campaign stars. Foreign decorations include the Australian Chief of Defence Commendation for promoting interoperability with Australian Defence Forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Phillips enjoys his family, history, outdoor sports, Duke basketball and is a participant in Officers' Christian Fellowship.
