docs After drafting your proposal, prepare a budget.

CalculatorThe budget is the translation of the work plan into dollars and cents. Preparing a budget can be very complex and should be started early in the grant process to avoid problems. Consult your WMU research officer for assistance.

Research faculty need to

  • determine what the project will need once funded for a grant or contract.
  • project such expenses as fringe rates and tuition rates over the life of the grant
  • present expenses in two major categories: Personnel Services; and, Other than Personnel Services.

Before discussing the project with a potential subcontractor, speak with your WMU research officer. Subcontracts are any purchase of services or program-related tasks.

Proposal budget guidelines (i.e., Fringe Rates) pdf

  • If the project includes tuition, use the projected rate for the time frame of the project.
  • Indirect cost (F&A) split is applicable when the project involves more than one unit. The percent for each should be indicated in the item entitled "other".
