Dr. Sharer is the Director of Intellectual Property (IP) Management & Commercialization at Western Michigan University (WMU). He was hired in 2005 to start the new business unit at WMU, to create a long-term plan for managing its IP assets, and to develop commercial opportunities based on those assets. Since accepting this role, invention production has increased by 600% and commercialization activity has increased by over 500%.
During this tenure, he has also served as the Director of WMU's Research Foundation, a separate 501c(3) that managed WMU's research contracts with industry, in addition to acting as the owner of WMU's IP.
Dr. Sharer has 14 years of experience making and overseeing investment decisions in early-stage technologies and in managing the commercialization pipeline. During this period, he has negotiated numerous license agreements and has helped launch numerous start-up companies in a variety of industries and markets.
Previously, he was a Licensing Manager at the University of Michigan and a project manager at a consulting firm in the pharma/biotech industry.
Dr. Sharer is also an author of several peer-reviewed publications on IP management, innovation, and technology transfer and has given numerous invited presentations on these topics. He has a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and a Master's degree in business from Purdue University.
