Education

Dr. Covell received his Ph.D. from Princeton University 2001. He also holds and MA in Asian Studies from the University of Hawai'i and a BA in Political Science from UCSD. He was a research student and later postdoc at Tokyo University and attended the Inter-university Center for Japanese Language Education in Yokohama.

Current Research

Dr. Covell's research focuses on contemporary Japanese Buddhism. He has over ten years experience of living and conducting research in Japan including stints as a research associate at Taisho University, the Institute for Asian Cultural Studies at International Christian University and Tokyo University. He is current research interests and writing projects include:

  1. a book Buddhist education in contemporary Japan,
  2. a book on Buddhist preaching in modern Japan,
  3. a biography of Yamada Etai
  4. a textbook on death and dying in Asia

Teaching

Dr. Covell is responsible for teaching COR 3080, Japanese Religions, on a regular basis. He also regularly teaches COR 6150, a pedagogy course for graduate students. He has taught seminars on Religion and Ethics in Asia, Death and Dying in Asia, and Religion and Education. He is also the director of the study abroad course Japanese Religion and Culture (see http://homepages.wmich.edu/~scovell)
