Western Michigan University, like other universities, issues academic history records (Transcripts) directly to current and past students and to third parties as requested by students. A transcript is issued directly to a student with proper picture identification. An UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT is produced by the Office of the Registrar for the use of the student on plain white paper and is distinctly marked as unofficial. For purposes of acceptance by other universities, this transcript is NOT considered OFFICIAL. Businesses and other agencies use their discretion in accepting this transcript as an official document for their particular use.
A transcript requested by a student to be sent to a third party (business or university) is considered OFFICIAL and is so noted. It is generated on security paper and signed by the University Registrar. If you are asked or required to provide a COPY of your transcript, please request the OFFICIAL COPY be mailed directly from the Office of the Registrar to the third party. You may have your transcript mailed directly to you in a sealed envelope. However, many institutions will not accept a transcript as official unless it is sent directly to their admissions office with the seal unbroken.
