Success Guide and General Education Requirements

In preparation for the start of freshman orientation, the General Education Guide has been updated on the Registrar’s Office website for the 2012/2013 academic year. A pdf of the 2012/ 2013 First Year Success Guide will be available later today.

FERPA, Directory Information and Confidentiality

Western Michigan University, in accordance with FERPA, has designated the following categories of information as directory information:

• Name
• Address
• Telephone number
• WMU e-mail address
• Curriculum and major field of study
• Dates of attendance
• Enrollment status (full/part-time)
• Degrees/awards received
• Most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student
• Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
• Weight/height of members of athletic teams.

FERPA regulations stipulate that an institution must give students the opportunity to withhold the release of any or all designated items of directory information. If a student wants to invoke this right and withhold the release of information, they must complete a confidentiality form located on the Registrar’s Office website at:

The notice will then remain in effect until it is revoked in writing by the student. Students who have made this request will be marked “confidential” in Banner and a “confidential” notation will appear on the upper right hand corner of all Banner screens. Do not release any directory information for a student who has requested confidentiality.

Copying Class Lists to a Spreadsheet

The instructions on how to copy a class list from GoWMU to a spreadsheet have been updated to better accommodate the addition of student photos. The new instructions are as follows and can be found on the Registrar’s Office website on the faculty tab:

• Highlight the list of names
• Select Copy
• Open a spreadsheet
• Select Paste (or Paste/special on a Mac)
• Highlight the class list and sort on column A (record number)
• Perform a “save as” and/or print

Upcoming Dates:

• Monday, May 21—Last day to receive 50% refund for complete withdrawal
• Monday, May 28—Memorial Day Recess
• Friday, June 1—Last day to receive 25% refund for complete withdrawal
• Monday, June 4—Last day to withdraw
• Wednesday, June 27—Session ends
• Saturday, June 30—Commencement
• Tuesday, July 3—Final grades due at noon
