Fall registration

Registration for fall 2009 opens today. The priority registration schedule can be found on http://www.wmich.edu/registrar/timeticketFall.html.

Fall courses

As we have approached the opening of fall registration, my office has been receiving communications from departments regarding classes they are not certain they will be able to run.

The best way to handle this issue is to put the section or sections on hold. Putting a course on hold will maintain the room assignment; the capacity will stay as it is. Sections on hold are not visible to students through the course offerings pages, and registration is blocked in these sections.

Then, when you know whether the section will run or not, submit a pink sheet to change the section status to either 'Active' or 'Canceled'.

If you put a section cap at zero, you will lose the room assignment, and the course will be visible on the course search, but students will not be able to enroll.

Also, please do add the instructor of record to your sections as soon as you know who the instructor will be!

Last day to withdraw

Today, March 16, is the last day students can withdraw from spring classes through GoWMU. Students can withdraw through 11:59 pm tonight.

Withdrawal policies – a review

WMU has three withdrawals time periods with different rules, as a summary:
1. Students can withdraw from any course online through GoWMU:

• From the day after drop/adds for a semester, through the Monday of the tenth week,
• Through March 16 for this spring semester,
• No permission is needed.

2. Students can withdraw from a course with permission of their instructor:

• From the day after the Monday of the tenth week through the last day of the semester,
• March 17 through April 24 for this spring semester,
• Requirements:
• genuine hardship (i.e., illness, death in the immediate family)
• Must be passing the course
• Must provide supporting documentation

3. Students can appeal for a late withdrawal from a course, after grades have been submitted.

• The appeal, with any and all supporting documentation, as well as with feedback from the instructor of the course, goes to GAPDAC for a decision which is final.

Final exams

• Final exams are scheduled for all classes during the week of April 20-24.  The final exam schedule can be found on : www.wmich.edu/registrar/finalexam.html
• All final exams are held in the normal classroom, unless other arrangements have been made with the Registrar’s Office.
• All final exams must be held as scheduled in the final exam schedule.
• Contact the Registrar’s Office with any questions, 387-4310.
• Use of classrooms for review sessions must be scheduled through the Registrar’s Office.

Summer, guest students and transfers

If you talk with WMU students who are planning to take a course at another school over the summer and transfer it back, please remind them -

• To ensure that the course will transfer as they expect, they can verify this with an advisor, or online, http://www.michigantransfernetwork.org. Any questions should be directed to the Admissions Office.
• To remember that WMU accepts transfer courses with grades of ‘C’ or better.

Upcoming Dates

• Monday, March 16 – last day students can withdraw from Spring classes
• Monday, March 16 – Fall registration opens
• Monday-Friday, April 20-24 – Final exam week
• Saturday April 25 – Commencement
• Tuesday, April 28 – Grades due at noon
