A final reminder that final exams are held in the classroom the course has met in all semester. Please arrange any other classroom needs, for review sessions, meetings, etc. through the Registrar's Office. The make-up time for final exams is scheduled for 12:30-2:30 on Friday, December 15th. The complete fall 2006 final exam schedule is on www.wmich.edu/registrar/finalexam.html.
Also a reminder that FERPA prohibits posting of grades by WIN, SSN, or any part of the WIN or SSN. In addition, papers, exams, or other student work cannot be left in a public place for pickup by students. Further information on FERPA can be found on www.wmich.edu/registrar/FERPA.html.
We will continue to accept late drop forms in the Registrar's Office through Friday, December 15th. Note that policy on late drops requires genuine hardship for the student (illness, death in the immediate family), and that the student be passing the course. After grades are posted for fall, students wishing to withdraw need to complete an appeal for a late withdrawal.
From the undergraduate catalog: "This is a temporary grade, which the instructor may give to an undergraduate student when illness, necessary absence, or other reasons beyond the control of the student prevent completion of course requirements by the end of the semester or session. The grade of "I'' (Incomplete) may not be given as a substitute for a failing grade.
A grade of "I'' must be removed by the instructor who gave it or, in exceptional circumstances, by the department chairperson. If the unfinished work is not completed and the "I'' grade removed within one calendar year of the assignment of the "I,'' the grade shall be converted to an "E'' (failure). Students who receive an incomplete grade in a course must not reregister for the course in order to remove the "I.''
An instructor who assigns a grade of "I'' will complete an official Report of Incomplete Work form indicating the remaining requirement for removal of the incomplete grade and indicating the time allowed, if less than one full year. The instructor will retain a copy for his/her own records and submit a copy to the departmental office. The remaining copies will be returned to the Registrar's Office, which will provide the student with a copy."
Students wishing to withdraw from a course after grades are posted file an appeal for a late withdrawal. The student completes the late withdrawal form, attaches any documentation, and the instructor of record for the course or courses is also asked for input. Formerly, the request for information from the instructor was sent either by the student, or by this office, directly to the instructor. The appeal process has been slowed in many of these cases because the instructor is not currently at WMU. So, from this point on, we will send the request for instructor information to the Department Chair and ask that the Chair get the form to the instructor. In cases where the instructor is no longer at WMU, the Chair just needs to indicate this on the form and return to the Registrar's Office. These forms will be sent through email. Please let me know if you have any questions.
