Current projects/interests include: Studies that assess - usage of Internet pornography and the effect it has on relationships; hypermasculinity and courtship disorders; examining psychopathic characteristics and language usage in a nonclinical population; masturbatory behavior as a primary reinforcer during depressive episodes; sexual satisfaction and feminine gender role characteristics; physiological (penile plethysmography) and sexual interest assessments on accused and convicted sex offenders; assessment of false allegation of accused sex offenders; the role of empathy and alexithymia in sex offenders; assessment of homophobia, biphobia, and sexual preference (behavior and fantasy); and measuring differences between heterosexual and homosexual men and women with regards to attitude, sex drive, body satisfaction, and knowledge.

Projects included: Assessment of type, prevalence, and severity of psychopathology in juveniles who commit homicide. Cross-systems research to assess service delivery to adolescent sex offenders. Assessed stage of change for AIDS risk behaviors in an inpatient heterosexual chemically dependent minority population. Qualitative research methods were used to develop a motivational enhancement and behavior skill training treatment program. Results from this component are being compared against the standard HIV educational component.

Wright, Jr., Ph.D. Title: Development and maintenance of a website for information pertaining to homophobia and hate crimes against gay and lesbian individuals. The proposed website will serve as an up to date source of information for individuals interested in this topic. I have received permission from our Webmaster to host this website on a server at WMU. The grant will hopefully be funded and renewed on a yearly basis and will provide funding for a graduate student to update and maintain the site.

Wright Jr., Ph.D. Title: Do homophobic men have arousal to homosexual stimuli?: A replication and expansion study. This foundation grant is pending review. We have proposed to replicate our prior work by collecting data in a large urban area. We have chosen Chicago, IL as the data collection site. Communication Works is very interested in this project. They have presented the grant to the Horizon Foundation, a funding source for the grant.

The application has been submitted to the Horizon Foundation for funding consideration.

$25,000 Behavioral Science Track Award for Rapid Transition (B-Start). (1998). Principal Investigator. Submitted to National Institute of Mental Health. The goal of this project is to show differential facial EMG patterns and cue recognition of date rape behaviors for perpetrators and victims of date rape. (Grant received a good priority score but was not funded; it is being revised for resubmission).

 

$30,000 Placek Award. (1998). Principal Investigator. This grant has been submitted to the Placek Foundation. The purpose of this project is to empirically validate the processes of coming out and homosexual identity formation for gay and lesbian individuals. (Grant was denied but will be revised for resubmission when an appropriate mechanism is found).

$5000 awarded. (1998). The Faculty Research and Creative Activities Support Fund. Principal Investigator. Assessment of sexual arousal to date rape encounters.   

 

$500 awarded. (1998). The College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Award. An examination of the relationship of gender role and sexual orientation to sexual fantasy and sexual behavior. Supervised Megan Utke, undergraduate awardee.
