Graduate Study Checklist

Students completing their thesis, project or dissertation in the Department of Psychology at Western Michigan University will complete the following steps.

Master's thesis

  1. Meet with your advisor
    Coursework requirements: Behavior Analysis | Industrial/Organizational
  2. Permission to elect Course 7000
    Complete the form to elect Master's thesis hours.
  3. Complete the Program of Study form for psychology
    Once the Program of Study form is signed by the graduate advisor. Turn in the form to the graduate training secretary to send to the Office of the Registrar.
    30 Credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hours of PSY 7000 are required.
  4. Appointing a thesis committee
    Complete the Notification of Appointment to a Thesis Committee form.
  5. Apply for graduation - graduation audit
    Graduation, application instructions and deadlines
  6. Schedule defense with psychology graduate training secretary - 3700 Wood Hall.
  7. Signature forms required at orals.
    1. Turn in two original thesis approval forms with your finished thesis.
    2. The thesis defense form is to be signed at your orals and returned to the psychology graduate training office.
  8. Completed thesis is turned in to The Graduate College along with the signed defense forms.

Master's project

  1. Meet with your advisor
    Coursework requirements: Behavior Analysis | Industrial/Organizational
  2. Complete the Program of Study form for psychology
    Download the Program of Study form. Once signed by the graduate advisor it will be sent to the Office of the Registrar.
    30 Credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hours of PSY 7100 are required.
    I/O practicum option courses that should be listed
  3. Apply for graduation - graduation audit
    Graduation, application instructions and deadline dates
  4. Required oral defense signature form
    Complete the oral defense form.

Doctoral dissertation

  1. Meet with your advisor
    Coursework requirements: Behavior Analysis | Clinical
  2. Permission to elect dissertation credit hours
    This form can be found on The Graduate College website. All signatures are required.
  3. Comprehensive exam
    Meet with an advisor, then contact the psychology graduate training secretary to schedule a date to take the exam.
  4. Dissertation committee appointment form
    This form is found on The Graduate College website. All committee members must initial. If your 4th committee member is not a faculty member from Western Michigan University, you must obtain a vita from them and give it to the psychology graduate training secretary.
  5. Program of Study
    Please notify the graduate training secretary before you apply for graduation. The secretary will complete the program of study form for you and will send to graduation audit.
  6. Apply for graduation - graduation audit
    Graduation, application instructions and deadline dates
  7. Dissertation defense scheduling form
    This form is found on the graduate college forms page. All program requirements must be completed the semester before you plan to defend. Contact the graduate training office for form and room information. Form must be completed and one copy sent to the graduate college at least two weeks before you plan on defending, and the other copy to the psychology graduate training office. Failure to complete other steps may result in a delay for defense approval.
  8. Signature forms required at orals.
    1. Three original Dissertation Approval forms which can be downloaded from the Graduate College forms page. The white forms are turned in with your finished dissertation.
    2. The dissertation defense form is to be signed at your orals and then returned to the psychology graduate training office.
  9. Completed dissertation and accompanying forms turned in to The Graduate College along with the Dissertation Check-in Form.
