Dear Colleagues:
It is with deep sadness that I report to you that we have lost one of this University’s greatest treasures. President Emeritus Diether H. Haenicke died this morning at Bronson Methodist Hospital. He was 73.
While words to describe Dr. Haenicke’s contributions to this University are plentiful, it is extremely difficult to find terms that adequately express our deep sense of loss at his passing. Although short in stature, Dr. Haenicke was a giant among his contemporaries.
Dr. Haenicke was passionate about Western Michigan University, and his affection was demonstrated time and time again through his “touch”—a sense of special insight and leadership that enhanced the image of the University and its programs. He was also unwavering in his commitment to intellectual rigor and excellence. While we will miss him and his quick wit and infectious laugh, his footprint on this campus will remain forever.
On a personal note, Linda and I will always recall with special fondness the manner in which Diether and Carol Haenicke introduced and welcomed us to the University community. Our first meal during our interview here was with the Haenickes. We were touched by their warmth, openness, and genuine affection for this great institution—Western Michigan University. Linda and I knew early, and reaffirmed many times since, that the Haenickes not only led the University, they lived the University.
We will be meeting and working with Carol and the Haenicke family to find an appropriate date and time to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Haenicke, WMU’s fifth president. Additional information will be forthcoming.
In cooperation with the Haenicke family, immediate arrangements, including interactions with the press and communications, will be handled by Cheryl Roland in university relations. Understandably, the family needs quiet time to reflect on the loss of a husband, father and grandfather. Please join me in extending our wish that their loss will be lightened by the University’s and community’s shared affection for this great man—President Emeritus Dr. Diether H. Haenicke.
Respectfully,

John M. Dunn
President
