The Standard Political Science Major

This major is primarily designed for students with career interests in electoral politics, government service, and college teaching. A grade of "C" or better is required in all courses in the major. It is expected that transfer students will take at least one-half of the major’s hours in the department..  To print a copy of the major slip, see the Undergraduate Advising page

The major’s requirements are as follows:

Part I.

Student must choose one course in International & Comparative Politics from the following:

Student must choose one course in Political Theory from the following:

  • PSCI 3600 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory I
  • PSCI 3610 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory II
  • PSCI 3620 - Theoretical and Ideological Bases of Contemporary Politics
  • PSCI 3630 - American Political Theory
  • PSCI 5620 - Modern Democratic Theory

Student must take both of the following courses:

  • PSCI 3660 - Scope and Methods for Political Science
  • PSCI 3950 - Quantitative Methods for Political Scientists

Student must choose one course to meet Baccalaureate Writing Requirement

  • PSCI 4050 - National Public Policy (Beginning Spring, 2005)
  • PSCI 4210 - Gender and the Law
  • PSCI 4500 - Seminar in International and Comparative Politics (note pre-reqs)
  • PSCI 4900 - Political Science Honors Seminar
  • PSCI 4940 - Seminar in Political Science

Part II. Electives in political science sufficient to reach a minimum of 33 hours.

This minor’s requirements are as follows:

Part I.

  • PSCI 2000 - National Government
  • PSCI 2400 - Comparative Politics or PSCI 2500 - International Relations

    Student must choose one course in International & Comparative Politics from the following:

  • PSCI 3400 - European Politics
  • PSCI 3410 - Politics of Sub-Saharan Africa
  • PSCI 3440 - Russian and Central Asian Politics
  • PSCI 3450 - Latin American Politics
  • PSCI 3460 - Women in Developing Countries
  • PSCI 4400 - The European Union
  • PSCI 4410 - Issues in Comparative Politics
  • PSCI 4420 - Studies in Comparative Politics

    Student must choose one course in Political Theory from the following:

  • PSCI 3600 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory I
  • PSCI 3610 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory II
  • PSCI 3620 - Theoretical and Ideological Bases of Contemporary Politics
  • PSCI 3630 - American Political Theory
