Secondary Education Major and Minor


This major is primarily designed for students who wish to pursue a teaching certificate program in secondary education. A grade of "C" or better is required in all courses in the Secondary Education major. It is expected that transfer students will take at least one-half of the hours in the department.

Secondary Education Major


Requirements


Part I

  • PSCI 2000 - National Government
  • PSCI 2020 - State & Local Government
  • PSCI 2400 - Comparative Politics or PSCI 2500 – International Relations
Students must choose one course in International & Comparative Politics from the following:
  • PSCI 3400 - European Politics
  • PSCI 3410 - Politics of Sub-Saharan Africa
  • PSCI 3440 - Russian and Central Asian Politics
  • PSCI 3450 - Latin American Politics
  • PSCI 3460 - Women in Developing Countries
Students must choose one course in Political Theory from the following:
  • PSCI 3600 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory I
  • PSCI 3610 - Introduction to the History of Political Theory II
  • PSCI 3620 - Theoretical and Ideological Bases of Contemporary Politics
  • PSCI 3630 - American Political Theory
Students must choose one course in Research Methods from the following:
  • PSCI 3660 - Scope and Methods of Political Science
  • PSCI 3950 - Quantitative Methods for Political Scientists

Students must choose one course to meet Baccalaureate Writing Requirement (normally replaced by ED/ES 3950 and a political science elective)

Part II

Electives in Political Science sufficient to reach a minimum of 30 hours
 

Part III

Students must complete the following cognate requirements:
  • ECON 2010 - Principles of Microeconomics or ECON 2020 - Principles of Macroeconomics
  • GEOG 1020 - World Geography or GEOG 1050 - Physical Geography or GEOG 2050 - Human Geography
  • HIST 2100 - American History to 1877
  • HIST 2110 - American History since 1877
  • HIST 4940 - Teaching Methods in the Secondary School or GEOG 4600 - Geography/Social Studies Teaching in Middle School and High School

Part IV

Student must complete a minor in any teachable subject offered by WMU.
 

Secondary Education Minor


This minor prepares the secondary education student for the classroom. It is expected that transfer students will take at least one-half of the minor’s hours in the department.

An elective in political science at the 3000-level or higher sufficient to reach a minimum of 21 hours.
