International and Comparative Politics Major Advising

The advisors for the International and Comparative Politics Major are Dr. Jim Butterfield and Dr. Gunther Hega. Their office hours vary by semester; check with the Political Science office at (269)387-5680 to find out. Or you may contact them directly via email:

jim.butterfield@wmich.edu   gunther.hega@wmich.edu

There are many Study Abroad opportunities for students in this. If you are considering an international career (and you must, given that you signed on), then you should do all you can to incorporate a study abroad program into your course of study. More information on study abroad for Political Science students can be found here; you can also visit the WMU Office of Study Abroad.

Career Services has assigned a career advisor to the College of Arts and Sciences. Her name is Carolyn Hornev, and she is active in seeking information and resources for the International and Comparative Major. Her telephone number is 387-2745, and you may also reach her via email at carolyn.hornev@wmich.edu.

General Information on International Affairs

The International Affairs Network at the University of Pittsburgh has an extensive site with links to International Organizations, Think Tanks, Universities, Schools and Centers, and sources on International Law, Human Rights and International Security.

International Volunteer and Internship Information
  • Idealist is an enterprise of Action without Borders. The page lists hundreds of internships and jobs, many of them in non-profit organizations overseas. The search engine is awkward to use; you'll have to try lots of combinations of countries, specializations, etc. Plan on spending a while, but it may prove useful just because of the sheer quantity of listings.
  • International volunteer work is organized by Volunteers for Peace and Vision in Action.
  • InterAction also provides volunteer opportunities.
  • OneWorld keeps a list of volunteer positions and jobs.
  • The State Department keeps a list of links to organizations that recruit for teaching positions overseas.

  • You can view vacancies in the State Department and Foreign Service. While many of these are not entry level positions, they give an idea of backgrounds and positions in demand.
  • Another list of vacancies in International Organizations is more extensive. These are all INGOs (not NGOs), and many are in offices around the world.
  • Opportunties for Teaching Abroad, while not part of the State Department, are posted on its server.

The Peace Corps
  • The first place to start if you're interested in the Peace Corps is the Peace Corps page.
  • Returned Peace Corps volunteers are a tightly knit group; visit their home page to find out what volunteers do after they return.
  • There are a number of combined Masters Degree/Peace Corps programs. WMU has one of the newest: a Masters of Development Administration degree combined with the Peace Corps. Check the Peace Corps site for other Masters International Programs.
