Pre-Law Information and Resources

This guide is designed to help you with initial advising and access to resources. Students who plan to apply to law school should consult with the Pre-Law Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office, Nick Gauthier (nick.gauthier@wmich.edu)

A law degree is a very versatile degree. A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) is useful for a career as a lawyer, of course. But it is also a useful degree for careers in business, communications, politics, academia, not to mention non-practitioner jobs within the profession including the extensive legal products and services industry. Though no particular college major is required, some prepare you for law school better than others. For example, WMU's Political Science Department offers a Public Law major that attempts to prepare students for a career in law. The general Political Science major, as well as the department's concentrations in public policy and international relations/comparative politics also provide appropriate undergraduate education for law school-bound students.

First, it is necessary to determine whether law school is right for you. Talking to lawyers, both practicing and non-practicing, can be a helpful way to help make the decision. Here at WMU, regardless of your major, you should sign up for PSCI 320 which overviews the legal system, as well as the practice of law. You can also volunteer in a legal services program; do a legislative internship, or an internship in a law firm (please check with your political science or Business School advisor); join the Mock Trial Team; get involved in the student-run Pre-Law Society (). Many of the publications on the Suggested Reading List also provide practical information for making a decision about a career in law.
