The Heraclitean Society
The Heraclitean Society was established in 1973, initially supported by the remainder of funds from a conference sponsored by the Philosophy Department. The first Proceedings of the Heraclitean Society was published that year and issues have continued to be produced annually, or biannually, to the present. Click here to peruse recent volumes. Associate Professor of Philosophy Richard Pulaski (now Emeritus) served as Coordinating Editor from 1973 to 1993. The current editor is Professor of Philosophy Quentin Smith. The Proceedings feature articles by philosophy and other WMU faculty, visiting speakers, and students. Many students have the experience of being published for the first time when an article is accepted for this journal. Several have subsequently been published in refereed journals. Donations from a community member helped keep the Heraclitean Society functioning for many years. An endowment fund was established in 1991, which ensures continuing publication of the journal. In 2001, the Heraclitean Society Essay Prize competition was begun. This competition is open to all students studying for an MA in Philosophy at WMU. $1000 in prizes will be awarded each year to those students submitting the best philosophy paper to the competition. The first prizes will be awarded in February 2002.
