Dr. Do Ik Lee

He obtained a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1959 and both M. S. and doctoral degrees in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University in New York in 1964 and 1967, respectively. Since 1967, he worked in research at The Dow Chemical Company and attained the position of Senior Scientist in Dow Emulsion Polymers R&D. He recently retired from Dow and is currently working as Adjunct Professor at Western Michigan University. His research interests are latex technology, emulsion polymerization, structured latex polymerization, latex particle morphology-property relationships, living free-radical emulsion polymerization, thermal properties of latexes, solid and hollow plastic pigments, paper coating technology, dispersion rheology, particle packing, colloid science, viscoelastic properties of coatings, general coatings technologies, etc. He has published more than 50 reviewed technical papers and made numerous presentations outside of Dow. He holds 28 U. S. patents.

He received the 1986 TAPPI (The Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry) Coating & Graphic Arts Division Award and Charles W. Engelhard Medallion, and he was named a TAPPI Fellow in 1991. He received The American Chemical Society Midland Section Award for Outstanding Achievement and Promotion of Chemical Sciences in 1989. In 1992, he received The Saginaw Valley Patent Law Association’s Fire of Genius Award. Currently, he is a Technical Advisor to The Institute of Chang-Gang Paper Technology, Kangwon National University, which is the only non-profit paper research center in Korea. In 1997, he was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Paper Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Imaging at Western Michigan University. He served as Chair for the 2001 Gordon Research Conference on Polymer Colloids. In 2002, he was appointed as a member of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) Research Advisory Committee. In 2002, he was appointed as a member of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) Research Advisory Committee. He is currently serving on the Korea TAPPI Journal Editorial Board.
