Thomas W. Joyce, Ph.D., came to Western Michigan University's Department of Paper Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Imaging following a 19 year career as a professor in the Department of Wood and Paper Science at North Carolina State University. While at NCSU, Dr. Joyce distinguished himself as an educator, administrator, and researcher. His research spanned environmental investigations and uses of biotechnology in the Pulp and Paper Industry. In addition to his Wood and Paper Science appointment, Dr. Joyce was a member of NCSU's biotechnology faculty and an associate member of the University's Environmental and Chemical Engineering program. He also served as a visiting professor at Slovak Technical University, and at Academia Istropolitana, both in Bratislava, Slovakia.
