The Lithographic Press

The press is where the ink is applied to the substrate, usually, but not always, paper. Obtaining good results depends on the following components

1. Ink - Lithographic inks are paste inks (I.e., very viscous), as opposed to the relatively low viscosity liquid inks of flexo and gravure. These must be chosen properly for the particular substrate and final impression.

2. Substrate - Must be properly selected for the type of press and natural of the desired final product.

3. Presswork - Paper is brought from paper storage, ink from ink storage and the plates are mounted on the press. Ink is applied to the press and dampening systems are activated. This along with adjustments of ink, water and ink/water balance is called presswork. We will spend the some time discussing presswork, since that is the essence of producing a good product from offset lithography.
