WMU is a designated Carnegie Foundation high research university. With over 25,000 students on campus, cutting edge research by WMU faculty enhances the classroom and applied education of students. The University’s tradition of excellence in funded and unfunded research, public service and industry collaborations represents the breadth of faculty and student expertise.

The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Research is to support the external funding initiatives of WMU faculty, students, and staff, and to advance the overall research agenda of the University.

We assist faculty and staff with their research by offering information and services that span the following:

  • Funding sources
  • Grant proposal preparation
  • Grant and contract University approval and submission
  • Partnerships with industry, government and other institutions
  • Multidisciplinary collaborations within the University
  • Technology transfer and intellectual property issues
  • Research compliance regulation issues

We invite corporate, industry and governmental visitors interested in partnering with WMU researchers to contact the Technology Transfer staff. Western remains committed to its strong tradition of community engagement and economic development, evidenced by the University’s Business Technology and Research Park.
