Open Learning

What is Open Learning?
Open learning courses give you, the student, flexibility over when, where and at what pace you complete a course successfully online. Advantages of open learning include:

  • Open entry/open exit - You select your start date or end date
  • Self-paced, undergraduate level courses
  • Up to six months to complete (but may complete sooner)

Open Learning Courses - What is currently offered?
To view open learning courses please visit the course search, select a semester, and then choose Open Learning from the Instructional Method drop-down.

Open Learning Frequently Asked Questions

What tuition rate will I pay for an open learning course?

Tuition for all online courses, including open learning, is assessed at the Extended University Programs rate, and is not a part of the WMU flat rate.

How do refunds work if you don't follow a semester schedule?
Open learning sections have their own refund structure which is as follows:
  • Day 1 is your selected start date
  • Day 1-8 – 100% refund
  • Day 9-30 – 50% refund
  • Day 31-120 – no refund
Up to which point am I allowed to withdraw?

Students may withdraw through day 120.

Why did I receive an incomplete (I) on my transcript?

Incomplete (I) will appear on a transcript before the six month semester is over, if the course has not been completed. This is automatic from the WMU record system and does not give students additional time (view your completion date in the grade book section of your course.) If you complete your course before the end of the traditional campus semester, your grade will be posted during the semester grade run.
