Student Jobs at OIT

The Office of Information Technology hires many talented students every semester. Below are the types of positions that may be available and the procedure to follow for obtaining a student employee position with this department.

Unless noted below, applications, with attached class schedule, should be turned in to Delores Minshall in room 2008 (Pay Window) of the University Computing Center. If no specific position is requested, applications will be considered for all open positions. Applications are kept for six months.

Positions (all positions require excellent customer service skills)

Audio-Visual Technicians: Students in these positions ensure timely and accurate delivery of media carts to classrooms in Dunbar Hall as well as provide secondary equipment troubleshooting support. Students seeking one of these positions should plan on being a student at WMU for at least two semesters as well as have a working knowledge of AV equipment and familiarity with both Windows and Mac based machines. Working hours are between 7:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and between 7:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Fridays.

Classroom Technology Help Desk Attendant: Students in this position monitor the classroom technology command station for problems in the general purpose classrooms. When a help request is received, an intercom channel and remote controls are opened and then troubleshooting skills and published procedures are followed to correct the problem. If the problem is not resolved by this manner, a technologist is dispatched to assist in person. Log sheets and trouble tickets are completed on all requests. Because of the nature of this position, it is imperative that employees be on time and reliable. Good computer and people skills are required and applicants should plan to be a student at WMU for at least two semesters.

Computer Labs: OIT manages the BCC Lab, the UCC Lab, and the METL Lab. Students seeking employment in one of these labs should have basic computer skills. Nights, weekend, and break hours may be scheduled.

Computing Help Desk/Mobile Help Desk: Applicants must have good customer service skills, which includes being able to communicate technical information effectively to students, faculty and staff. They must also be knowledgeable about computers, both hardware and software, and computer topics, and be willing to follow established procedures. Work shifts may include evening, weekend, and break hours.

Computer Repair: Applicants interested in these positions must have a high level of technical skill and knowledge of computer hardware and software.

Faculty Technology Center: This position assists faculty in learning to use technology for teaching their courses. Candidates must have at least an intermediate level of computer skill and be able to explain processes clearly. Graphics and Web experience are a plus. Employees work 10 to 13 hours a week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and must plan to be a student at Western for at least two semesters. Interested students should turn their applications in at the Faculty Technology Center on the second floor of the University Computing Center.

Desk/Receptionist/Office: These positions staff the Technical Computing desk, the OIT front desk, and handle office duties for the OIT business office. General knowlege of computers is required, as is a knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Scheduled hours are between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Student Technology Lab: The STL is a specialized multi-media/graphics lab. Students seeking employment here should have intermediate computer skills with graphics and Web experience.
