How to Secure Web Pages

If you have pages on your Web site that are either providing or asking for personal information, e.g. ID numbers, name, address, or phone information, you will want to have those pages served using the secure protocol (https). Using the secure protocol encrypts information sent between your browser and the Web page and your Web page and the browser. This prevents anyone running a sniffer program to read the information.

  1. Create a folder in which the files you wish encrypted will reside, for example /secure.
  2. Include within that folder an x.htaccess file, and upload it to your account on www.
  3. Create your files and using your standard method of FTP, upload them to your account on www.
  4. Link your pages using your standard URL. The x.htaccess file will force a redirect of any pages in that folder to the https secure protocol.
