Computer Repair

The OIT computer repair shop (CRS) provides low-cost assistance with a variety of laptop and desktop maintenance and repair problems, including:

  • Hardware repair
  • Virus scanning and troubleshooting (with OIT Help Desk referral)
  • Data recovery
  • Hardware upgrades and installations (RAM, network cards, and more)
  • Data file back-ups and transfers
  • Diagnosing and fixing a variety of other operating problems

The CRS services Apple, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, and Hp computers (both warranty and out-of-warranty work). If you have a different brand of computer, you should check with other local community resources, or work directly with your computer's vendor.

Who can use the CRS?

The CRS is available only to WMU students, faculty, and staff.

How does the service work?

All work is typically done on the premises of the CRS, which is located with its own entrance at the NW end of the second floor of the University Computing Center. Customers should bring their laptop and its power adaptor, or desktop CPU and all appropriate software (operating system software and/or application software) to the CRS during normal business hours. All items will be left with the CRS. All software must be legal copies that are licensed directly to the customer.

The CRS works on a first-come, first-served basis. Repairs and installations can take anywhere from one to seven business days, depending upon the number and type of requests in the queue. You may wish to call ahead to see how busy the CRS is, but the best estimate of time can only be made at check-in, since requests for service can fluctuate on short notice.

Customers will be asked to sign a service request. You should read it carefully. Payment is due at the time of pick-up.

Costs

The charge for out-of-warranty work is $50 per hour, with a $50 minimum charge. If you are unsure about the nature of your problem, you machine can be tested ($50 charge) and a cost estimate provided before any repair work is undertaken.
