IT Points of Pride

  • WMU has made the top 100 of the Yahoo Most Wired Universities
  • Wireless Western - WMU was the first public, research intensive institution to implement wireless connectivity across the whole campus.
  • WMU was rated #2 most "unwired campus" by Intel in 2005. Intel had rated WMU #8 in 2003.
  • Wireless Institute – Western was awarded a $500,000 Fund for the Improvement of Education grant to research wireless in teaching, learning and research.
  • The University is a founding member of Merit, Inc. which oversees the state-wide MichNet network. In addition, WMU was one of the initial affiliates of the Internet 2 initiative.
  • WMUnet - The campus network delivers 1Gb connectivity to approximately 80 buildings, the new College of Engineering Parkview Campus, as well as the five branch campus’ throughout West Michigan.
  • WMU is assisting the companies of the Business Technology and Research Park with Internet connectivity.
  • Residential Computing – ResNet has been providing network connectivity to every residence hall room since 1988; first as asynchronous service and then in 1998 as 10Mb, switched Ethernet, and now with a “port-per-pillow” connectivity throughout the residence halls and campus apartments.
  • OIT assisted with the design of the College of Engineering and Applied Science Parkview Campus, and the College of Health and Human Services building, to employ state-of-the-art classrooms, convergent technology, and distance learning facilities.
  • In a quest to move towards convergence of voice, video and data – The Parkview Campus, the new Southwest Michigan Branch Campus, and the new Health and Human Services Campus is delivering Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service.
  • In support of the academic mission, OIT’s Faculty Support Services has enhanced lecture halls and classrooms with various degrees of instructional delivery capabilities. From simple “docking stations” for PC’s connecting to video projectors, to full multimedia podiums. In addition, a collaborative computing classroom has been developed to meet the instructional needs of various curricula.
  • Student lap top initiative - In 1999, the Haworth College of Business was an early adopter of requiring incoming freshmen to own a lap top computer. This also initiated a pilot study for wireless connectivity on campus.
  • Faculty lap top initiative – lap top computers have been issued to faculty so they may enhance their instructional capabilities and take full advantage of Wireless Western.
