Research
Projects
Each
REU participant will be assigned to an existing research project in
construction engineering and management. They will be supervised
by
faculty mentors.
Participants will learn the various aspects of the
the 10-week summer experience.
Construction Engineering and Management (CEM)
Short Course
A short
course covering basic concepts in construction engineering and
management such as project planning, scheduling, and estimating; bridge
management; and data modeling and information technology for construction
will be the first activity.
Seminars
Construction
engineering and management technical papers will be presented
and discussed during these seminars. These seminars will be conducted by
guest speakers as well as by REU participants and mentors.
Site Visits to a Pre-Selected Construction
Site
All REU
participants will visit a pre-selected construction project site.
The participants will be divided into teams of two or three
members. Each
team will focus on a given task on the job site. Each team will then
write a
progress report for the assigned task and keep a record of how the task
progresses from one visit to the next.
Visiting an Owner Organization
All REU
participants will visit an owner organization such as the Michigan
Department of Transportation (MDOT) or the City of Kalamazoo Engineering
Office. They will tour the various engineering divisions that develop
and
administer construction projects.
Visits to Research Centers and Laboratories
REU
participants will visit one or two research centers/laboratories such
as the U. S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory
in Illinois, Construction Technology Laboratory (CTL) in Illinois, and
the Argonne
National Laboratory (ANL) in Illinois.
Social Activities
Many
recreational and cultural activities exist in Kalamazoo
Michigan as well as in the region (from Chicago to Detroit). A
