Their Volunteer Marketplace 1998 Catalog contains T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, and other promotional/recognition items; books; videos; and youth volunteer program development materials. Their Volunteer Marketplace Resources catalog lists print resources including Volunteer Leadership Magazine (a quarterly) and Grapevine: Volunteerism’s Newsletter (a bi-monthly 16 page publication).

Robert Lohmann (Social Work at West Virginia University) moderates the ARNOVA-L LIST which is an active discussion group made up of academics and some agency executives. It does include a good deal of discussion of issues related to volunteering but is not very practice-oriented. To join, contact Roger Lohmann (RLOHMAN@ wvnvm.wvnet.edu).

Philanthropy Journal Online

This weekly electronic journal provides a wide range of information about nonprofits, fundraising, and volunteers. You may also sign up for a free e-mail newsletter, Philanthropy Journal Alert. Philanthropy Journal Online is available free on the world wide web (http://philanthropy-journal.org).

The NonProfit Times On-Line

Here is another free web journal on nonprofits, this one a monthly. It frequently contains news items on volunteering along with much very practical advice on financial management, insurance, and other nonprofit issues. It may be found at (http://www.nptimes.com/).

Philanthropy News Digest

This is a free weekly web journal that is issued by the Foundation Center. Most of the content is news about major gifts and actions by foundations. It is a great source of information about emerging trends in funding. Its web address is (http://fdncenter.org/phil/philmain.html).

World Wide Web Sites

The Direction Center in Grand Rapids, MI is a management support organization that provides a wide range of services and training opportunities for nonprofits (http://www2.gvsu.edu/~directct/).

Action Without Borders (http://www.idealist.org/) has a very extensive web site with information on volunteering and many other nonprofit issues, volunteer opportunities, jobs internships, and links to many other relevant web sites.

Philip Walker has an outstanding "Nonprofit Resources Catalogue" (http://www.clark.net/pub/pwalker/home.html) on the web. This provides a wide range of links, especially links related to United Way.

Putnam Barber has a very extensive site of information on all aspects of nonprofits (http://www.nonprofit-info.org).

Sound Volunteer Management has a site that serves both volunteer program managers and volunteers (http://www.halcyon.com/penguin/svm.htm). The pages for volunteer managers include mini-courses on many issues of volunteer management.

The Points of Light Foundation (http://www.americaspromise.org/pol/) is a U.S. government supported advocate for volunteerism and government service.

Independent Sector (http://www.indepsec.org) is an excellent source of information on trends in volunteering and philanthropy. They are also a good source of information on research that is currently being conducted on nonprofits.

Impact Online is a web site that includes information for volunteers and volunteer opportunities (http://www.impactonline.org).

Sarah Nesbeitt and Richard Truxall of the University of Michigan maintain "Internet Resources for Non-Profit Public Service Organizations" (http://www.sils.umich.edu/~nesbeitt/nonprofits/nonprofits.html). This contains a wealth of information and does include a section on "Volunteer Activity".

Charity Village is an outstanding site designed to support volunteering in Canada (http://www.charityvillage.com). Among its many features is a library of on-line information for volunteers.

Legal Handbook

James DeWitt’s A Legal Handbook for Nonprofit Corporation Volunteers is available on the web at (http://www2.polarnet.com/~jdewitt/vl/). This work, now in its third edition, is a great place to start with a range of legal issues for volunteers. Given the length of this document, you may want to purchase a copy for $10.
