Bruce Naftel, professor emeritus, is a graphic designer and design educator and was a professor of art with 39 years of service in the Frostic School of Art teaching in the graphic design program. He was assistant professor at Swain School of Design for three years before joining the Western Michigan University art faculty in 1974 where he became the educational director of the Design Research Center and coordinated the graphic design program until 1987. During the following teaching years he was assistant director of the Frostic School of Art from 2001 to 2003 and associate director from 2003 to 2005 and 2011 to 2012.
Bruce has a long-standing national reputation for his contributions to the graphic design profession and graphic design education. He has received many professional design commissions, has lectured and given workshops, participated in juried and invitational exhibitions for major national venues including AIGA/ New York; Society of Typographic Arts, Chicago; New York Type Directors, and Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC.
His work has been included in National and International publications Graphis, Print, Communication Arts, Graphic Design USA, Design in Michigan, AIGA Communication Journals, and Idea, Japan.
In 1979 he had a studio residency at Birmingham Polytechnic, Division of Design, U.K. In 1984 he spent one-year as an exchange professor with the Department of Art, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu. In 2000 he and completed Summer studies in the Netherlands in de Program: New Communication Models in Graphic Design.
During his phase out retirement from 2011-13 he studied Spanish and participated in Study Abroad programs in Querétaro, Mexico, 2012; and the Spanish Language and Culture Experience, Santander, Spain, 2013.
