Electronic Resources

The Electronic Resources unit supports the missions of Western Michigan University and the University Libraries by providing superior user service to the WMU community by acquiring, making discoverable, maintaining, and troubleshooting carefully selected electronic resources that support the University's curriculums.

The Electronic Resources unit is responsible for:

  • Administration and customization of the Discovery Layer (Library Search/Primo)
  • Shared administration of the Integrated Library System (Alma)
  • Off Campus Authentication (EZ Proxy)
  • OpenURL linking
  • The Electronic Resources Lifecycle of

— 500 databases— 800,000 ebooks— 160,000 ejournals— 150,000 streaming audio/video files— 14,000 newspapers— 300,000 documents— 20,000 proceedings, data sets, dissertations, scores, and other materials

  • Solving problems related to electronic resources, the ILS, the discovery layer, and the technology and tools used to access them
  • Maintaining and A-Z list of databases
  • Maintaining print journal subscriptions
  • Gathering and maintaining an archive of electronic resources usage statistics
  • Staying abreast of trends and industry standards, and quickly acquiring new skills as the information landscape changes
