Master of Public Administration, health care administration, 2014

Chief Administrative Officer at the Kalamazoo Gastroenterology Hepatology Digestive Health Center

I am an administrator responsible for all staff and processes related to quality healthcare delivery.  I am responsible for all financial, human resource, compliance, operations, facility, and information technology.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

Most rewarding: Being involved in all aspects of delivering quality outpatient care.  Seeing all the departments, people, and processes come together to deliver effective and efficient care is a joy.  Most challenging: I plan to research the middle path as the normative model for effective public administration for my PhD.  Fulfilling the needs of all stakeholders is the goal. However, practical compromise (the middle ground) is where full solutions are found.  Bringing all stakeholders to the table and developing the middle answer is challenging.

Which of your skills had the biggest impact on your success?

Confidence has been my key to success. Like everyone, I lack confidence in many situations.  However, experience has proven to me that CEOs, doctors, and other seemingly smart and successful people also lack confidence.  The key is to know what you don't know, know when to lead, know when to follow and realize that we all put our pants on the same way.

What advice would you offer students to help them decide on a career path?

It appears we will have many different careers unless we enter a vocation.  Either, find your calling early and become a master of your trade or identify a few careers that interest you and try to devise a path that provides synergy and easy transitions from one career to the next.  For example, if you enjoy IT and medicine maybe train for an early IT career which you can transition into the medical IT field.
