You may be surprised to learn that 8.2% of the U.S. population aged 12 and older has a substance use disorder (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2013). As a health care provider, it is critical to know how to help patients and clients deal with substance use behaviors that affect their health and well-being. The Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) clinical intervention is one useful method to address such issues within your patient and client population.

Western Michigan University would like to offer you an opportunity to learn a clinical intervention that could change the lives of your patients and clients. We are offering free continuing education credits for you to take an online training in the SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) method. This is a $50 training provided at no cost to you.

We want to learn how this training enhances your competency in screening for problematic substance use, as well as intervention and referral to treatment. With that in mind, we invite you to participate in a research study to evaluate the SBIRT training you receive. The title of this study is “Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training with Students and Community Organizations in the Health Professions in West Michigan." The research is part of a three-year project funded by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Its mission is to drastically increase the competency of health care providers in administering substance use screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment.

To participate in this research and training opportunity, you must provide services or supervise those who provide services to patients/clients in the medical or mental health fields and enroll for continuing education credits for the online training course.

The course consists of four interactive modules and will take approximately four hours to complete. You may receive up to four free CE credits for your completion of the course. Credit available: AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, NBCC, DCBN, FBM, FAPA.
