Some WMU offices reduce hours, close over spring recess

Spring recess is March 5-9. There are no classes March 2 for Spirit Day.

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Some campus services at Western Michigan University will be on reduced hours during spring semester recess, which begins Monday, March 5, and continues through Friday, March 9. There are no classes during the recess, but most WMU offices are open normal hours. In addition, there are no classes Friday, March 2, for Spirit Day.

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 11. Classes resume beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 12.

Office closings apply to non-represented University employees. Many represented employees have contractually scheduled regular work days between Thursday, March 1, and Monday, March 12, since the University continues to provide services during the recess. Represented employees should direct questions to their management.

There are several public events on campus during spring recess, including the continuation of a free art exhibit "Site & Survey: The Architecture of Landscape," by Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson and Lina Puerta, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Saturday, March 10, in the Monroe-Brown Gallery of the Richmond Center for Visual Arts.

The Western Invitational Jazz Festival opening concert featuring Kenny Werner on piano will be at 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, in Dalton Center Recital Hall; and the festival's closing concert featuring the University Jazz Orchestra is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall.

The Bronco gymnastics team will take on Ball State University at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10, University Arena.

Hours for campus offices and services

Visitors are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular service is open. For emergencies only, contact the WMU Department of Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Campus services

Many offices, including AdmissionsBronco Expressfinancial aid, Office of Student Transitions, Miller Auditorium and all University academic advising offices will maintain normal hours throughout the recess.

The Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall building closes at 8 p.m. Friday, March 2; is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 3; closed Sunday, March 4; open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; open 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday, March 10; and open 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday, March 11.

Bronco Transit  Main Campus and Parkview routeswill not run Friday, March 2, or Monday through Friday, March 5-9. Routes will resume operation Monday, March 12. The Aviation Shuttle will run on its Saturday reduced hours March 5-10.

Sindecuse Health Center and its pharmacy are closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4 and March 10-11 and open normal hours Monday through Friday, March 5-9.

Student Recreation Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 2; closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4; open reduced hours 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; and open noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. The pool will be closed March 5-11. The recreation center resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Monday, March 12. The center's main office will maintain regular hours, opening at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9.

Unified Clinics will maintain normal hours throughout the recess.

Libraries

Waldo Library is open reduced hours, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, March 1; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 2; closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 10; and noon to midnight Sunday, March 11.

The Swain Education and Maybee Music and Dance libraries will be closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4; open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; closed Saturday, March 10; and open from 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday, March 11.

Zhang Legacy Collections Center, Archives and Regional History collections will also be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 3; closed Sunday and Monday, March 4-5; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, March 6-9; open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 10; and closed Sunday, March 11.

Special Collections and Rare Book Room will be closed Friday to Sunday, March 2-4; open by appointment Monday through Friday, March 5-9, and closed Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. The libraries resume normal hours Monday, March 12.

Campus computing

  • Bernhard Center computer lab closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 2, and resumes its normal 24-hour operation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 11.
  • Information Technology Help Desk closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 2; is closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; and closed Saturday, March 10. The Help Desk resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, March 11.
  • Mobile Help Desk is closed Friday, March 2, through Saturday, March 10. It will resume normal hours Sunday, March 11.
  • University Computer Center lab closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 2, and remains closed Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4; is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 5-9; closed Saturday, March 10; and resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, March 11.

To reduce energy costs during the recess, heating and cooling systems in all classroom buildings controlled by the WMU Building Energy Management System will be in recess mode. Air handlers will not run during this time unless a space is exempt from the program or the temperature in a particular space goes outside of the range of 60 to 85 degrees. Portions of a particular building that do not normally go into night setback mode will not go into holiday mode.
