Robbery reported near WMU residence hall triggers campus alert

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—A reported armed robbery near Western Heights residence hall triggered the Western Michigan University campus alert system Monday, Oct. 31.

A male student told WMU Department of Public Safety officers that he was meeting someone in the parking lot of the hall to discuss a cellphone sale at approximately 8:50 p.m. While sitting in a car, the suspect, according to the student, pulled a handgun and demanded the student turn over all of his cash. The student did so and was unharmed.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set male driving a silver Pontiac vehicle.

Members of the campus community are advised to be alert and to move about the campus with caution. Anyone with information about this crime should call WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

The WMU Alert system advised students of the incident via text message, email and phone message.
