KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Japanese musician Sato Michiyoshi will demonstrate the versatility of the shamisen at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in Western Michigan University's Dalton Center Lecture Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

In his performance, Michiyoshi will draw from his traditional training and from his experience playing Tsugaru-jamisen, a genre of contemporary improvisational music often associated with rock and pop styles.

Long loved and appreciated in Japan, the three-stringed spike lute, or shamisen, has developed into an instrument that interprets both traditional and popular styles.
