To Learn We Must Dig
_______________________________________________________

to learn we must dig
if deep hardpans or other barriers are suspected
movement out of the surface
                        depends upon permeable layers
the dark-colored surface is
                        normally the most mellow
at one extreme it can be
                        squeezed into a smooth smear

the ideal is grouped
                        into stable crumbs
next best are blocky
                        nutlike aggregates

worst of all are the structureless
at one extreme each is by itself
at the other massives without form
color by itself is not important

but suggests other conditions
a few dark ones are poor

             easily lose their structure
             and so become massive
and if some horizons are mottled
